Brian LaraVeritas Advisory continues to mix with some of the world’s elite sports people.

In cricket circles, Brian Lara is one of the greatest!  He is the only batsman to have scored a hundred, a double century, a triple century, a quadruple century and a quintuple century of runs in a first class career. It was on the hallowed turf of the Sydney Cricket Ground that Brian revealed what it was like to lead a team in the most stressful of circumstances.

The grand batsman was of course the Captain of the West Indies side at various times but most notably during the debacle of the pay dispute turmoil preceding Australia’s tour of the West Indies in 1999. Subjected to an actual threat of his own sacking and with a dismal performance by his team in the 1st test of that tour, Brian then led his team to a turnaround 10 wicket victory in the 2nd test.

While overlooking the pristinely prepared Sydney Cricket Ground, Brian provided an insight in how he led his side to win the 3rd test by 1 wicket with a personal score of 153 not out. This innings is regarded by Wisden as being inferior only to Sir Donald Bradman’s 1937 Ashes innings of 270.

Ultimately his side lost the 4th test and he was eventually replaced as Captain but Brian let the intimate audience into his thinking of how to prepare, support and lead his team through such a stressful period.

This fine example shows that despite dramatic turmoil, if you have a focus and commitment you can deliver victories and your plan along with a team providing fullsome support.
